Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact and which is known to cause cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, mouth, throat, and anal cancers. A well-established vaccine has been developed and is being continuously improved, and vaccination at 11-12 years of age can stimulate a stronger immune response, providing better long-term protection and allowing the vaccine to be administered in two doses rather than three doses.
In a study led by Robert Bednarczyk at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers analyzed a 2016 dataset of vaccination information from a nationwide CDC survey. They found that while about 43.4% of 13-17 year olds were fully vaccinated against HPV (a rate that itself needs to be improved), but only 15.8% of adolescents had received all recommended doses by their 13th birthday. This meant that nearly 85% of adolescents were missing out on the benefits of boosted immunity from timely dosing. The study also highlighted issues with provider record keeping and information sharing, as adolescents with multiple providers were less likely to be up to date on their HPV vaccination by age 13 or 15.
