Hantavirus in the Americas: Confirmed cases in Argentina

In 2011 there have been 4 confirmed cases of hantavirus.  These patients have been recovering favorably. All reported were in Argentina.  The previous year, there had been a total of 30 positive cases.  The symptoms originally appear to be similar to flu, however after 3 days patients experience difficulty in breathing.

Several hantaviruses are associated with human infection in Argentina.  This includes the Andes virus, Oran, Bermejo virus, and Andes-like virus.  All of them are carried by rodents.  Some of the most notable reserviors are the long-tailed pygmy rice rat host, the yellow pygmy rice rat, and the I. flavescens.  The virus is acquired by breathing in the virus from the dried feces fo the rodent.
