A New York Times article reports that a high school wrestling tournament in West Virginia may have led to five cases of herpes gladiatorium (HSV-1) on one of the wrestling teams. Because HSV-1 is highly contagious and spread via skin-to-skin contact, health officials suspect that all competing wrestlers may have been exposed.
This article reminded me of the many ways in which human behavior, and even human behaviors that are not seen as particularly risky or dangerous, can facilitate the transmission of viruses.
