During 2010 an outbreak of rabies cases in dogs and humans in Yemen has caused at least 10 deaths so far, reports ProMed Mail. 1751 cases of rabies have been reported in the past year, although it is unclear whether this number refers to those who have received post-exposure prophylaxis, or simply the number of people bitten by animals presumed to be rabid. In either case, these number are unusually high and particularly alarming for a preventable disease that kills nearly all its victims, and presents a significant public health threat. Children and males have been disproportionately affected by the outbreak, which has been attributed to the increase in the number of stray dogs roaming the streets.
