An oyster hatchery n New Zealand was recently forced to close due to a herpes virus outbreak. The farm provided 20% of New Zealand’s oysters and there have been herpes outbreaks at other farms in New Zealand. The strain of herpes infecting the oysters is harmless to humans but it kills oysters. The virus is specific to pacific oysters and has not affected the muscle industry in New Zealand. Recently, it has been challenging for oyster hatcheries to buy stock due to the prevalence of the herpes outbreak.
